Restasis is a potential medication that is commonly used for the treatment of dry eyes due to a certain type of eye condition called keratoconjunctivitis sicca. This medication is used to treat a type of chronic dry eye condition caused by inflammation. Restasis is an ophthalmic preparation contains cyclosporine as the primary ingredient.

What Is The Working Action Of Restasis?

Restasis (Cyclosporine) falls in the category of medications called Immunomodulators. It produces action by inhibiting T-lymphocytes therefore, eliminates the source of the cyclic tear-gland tissue destruction and release of chemical mediators that lead to the patient’s signs and symptoms.

What Are The Conditions You Should Not Use Restasis?

  • You should not use the medication if you are allergic to any ingredient in the medication and talk to the doctor in case of herpes infection of the eye, punctual plug, and severe eye infection.
  • Discuss with the doctor or prevent using any prescription and nonprescription medications, nutritional supplements, vitamins, and herbal products along with this medication to avoid drug interactions.

The Method Of Application Of Restasis:

Before application, you should wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. Restasis is used to the affected eye(s) usually two times in a day, about 12 hours apart; or as advised by your doctor.  Tilt your head back, pull down the lower lid of your eye with your index finger to form a pocket and bring the eye drop above the eye with another hand now gently squeeze the dropper so that a single drop falls into the pocket. Close your eyes at least 2 to 3 minutes place your finger on your tear duct and wipe out extra medicine. Try not to touch the tip of eye drop to prevent the contamination.

What Are The Side Effects Of Restasis?

Common side effects may likely to occur such as overflow of tears, burning, itching, stinging, redness, or pain of the eyes, blurred vision or other vision changes, red eyes eye discharge, and feeling that something is in the eye.

What Are The Preventive Measures While Using Restasis?

  • Talk with the doctor in the case of pregnancy and lactation before using the medication.
  • Remove your contact lenses and spectacles while using the eye drop.
  • In the case of children, the efficacy of Restasis is not cleared, therefore, discuss with the doctor.
