Neosporin Eye Ointment consists of three generic medicines called NeomycinPolymyxin B sulfate, and Bacitracin. Neosporin Eye Ointment is widely used to treat eye infections caused by bacteria. It is used to manage superficial eye infections such as conjunctivitis, keratitis, and keratoconjunctivitis, blepharitis and blepharoconjunctivitis

Working of Neosporin Eye Ointment

Neomycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that blocks protein synthesis by binding with ribosomal RNA and causing misreading of the bacterial genetic code. Polymyxin B interacts with the phospholipids components of the membrane and enhances the permeability of the bacterial cell. Bacitracin interferes with bacterial cell wall synthesis. These all together produces bactericidal effects.

Dosing Regimen Of Neosporin Eye Ointment

An individual has to apply Neosporin Eye Ointment to the affected eyes at every 3 to 4 hours for 7 to 10 days. In order to apply this ointment, you just tilt your head back and pull down softly and apply a thin film of the ointment into your lower eyelid. Remove the contact lenses before using this eye ointment. If you want to use contact lenses, then put them on after 10-15 minutes of the use of Neosporin Eye Ointment.

Contraindications Of Neosporin Eye Ointment

  • The use of Neosporin Eye Ointment is prohibited in individuals who have shown hypersensitivity to any of its components.
  • Neosporin Eye Ointment should not be used in pregnancy and lactating condition.
  • Neosporin Eye Ointment is also contraindicated in case of renal disorders.

Drug Interactions Of Neosporin Eye Ointment

Neosporin Eye Ointment may show interaction with the following medicines:

  • Acarbose
  • Tobramycin
  • Aminoglycosides
  • Pancuronium bromide
  • Amphotericin B
  • Ascorbic acid

Precautions To Be Followed While Using Neosporin Eye Ointment

  • Never allow the tip of the ointment tube to touch the eyes or hands.
  • It is not effective against fungal or viral infection in the eyes, so use this ointment only in case of bacterial infection in the eyes.
  • Never share Neosporin Eye Ointment with another person to avoid further spread of infection.
  • Neosporin Eye Ointment should not be used by a child.

Side effects of Neosporin Eye Ointment

An individual may face some side effects while using Neosporin Eye Ointment such as severe itching, watering, reddishness, or swelling of the eyes, pain in the eyes, and conjunctival erythema.
